Broken? (Project 365/2010)

Well we've had an eventful day. I had just walked in the door from Love & Logic when my cell phone rang around 11:10 am. I answered, in a manner not becoming of me, because Cameron had called me 3 times already with up and down blood sugar. "Mrs. Johnson this is Mr. Goodrow over at Vanguard." OH CRAP! The Principal was calling me. My first thought was I am going to hurt Cameron, because Cameron and a little buddy were already in Mr. Goodrow's office the FIRST day of school for being idiots and scratching each other with lead pencils. I digress. After I acknolwedged Mr. Goodrow he went on to say, "I have Cameron in the health office." OH CRAP! Is Cameron's blood sugar so low he can't call? The nurse isn't calling me...Dear God, did they have to use a glucagon? After I asked if he was okay, Mr. Goodrow went on to say, "Cameron and some friends were playing soccer and ... I think Cameron's broke his foot. The goal post came down on it. He's going to need some x-rays. I need you to come pick him up." You have got to be freaking kidding me.

I hung up the phone and called Cameron's doctor immediately. They were able to get us in at 3:45 pm and upon assessment, x-rays afterwards. I called Hubby and told him what happened, asked him to get a couple of period subs for the remainder of the school day, and off I went to pick up Cameron. On the drive over I was thinking just what a ROCKIN' immune system Cameron has. I told myself, I bet it's not broke, just severely sprained. (Don't get me started about poor Peyton, who was counting on lunch when we walked in the door, but had to leave immediately after and was crying for food.)

When I got to the school, Kristy, who is a front office gal, worked with my husband as an aid a few years ago, and was our fill-in nurse last year when our nurse wasn't in, grabbed me from behind the desk and said, "Come on." Her face read like a book. It was BAD! Before I got around the desk, out came Mr. Goodrow and Mrs. Bell, the counselor, and the looks on their faces were the same. Mr. Goodrow explained that Cameron and 4 friends tried to pick up and put right a tipped over goal post, that was chained to a 2nd goal post. OMG! Cameron got the brunt of it. Mrs. Bell was there because Cameron was extremely upset and worried about how this will affect his diabetes. He's only been back on the pump a week. I started crying because I had all the same thoughts in my head. I compossed myself and followed Mr. Goodrow to the health office.

My heart was broken. He looked so sad and he was in so much pain. I called the doctor to see if we could get him in sooner and they were able to move us up to 2:30. Kristy wheeled Cameron out to the car and lifted my son into the passenger seat. God Bless her! Off we went to get Hubby.

We drove like crazy to the doctor's office, tryign to catch her before lunch, to say WE CAN'T WAIT! We missed her by mere minutes. I arranged for my Aunt Pam to pick Dylan up from school, and then we raced over to the school to pick up Dylan. We got home and all kids needed lunch. Cameron took his blood and he was already in the 300's. His ketones were small. The pain and stress from his foot was affecting his diabetes. Off Cameron and Hubby went to the doctor's and then to x-ray. We won'tt hear anything until tomorrow. TOMORROW! What?!?!?!? X-rays are instant. Grrrrrr. Cameron's numbers were in the HIGH 300's at dinner and still small ketones. We corrected, corrected, corrected, water, water, water, and checked his ketones every hour until bed. By then he wasn't dropping ketones, but his numbers were still elevated. The last thing I needed was Cameron in DKA too.

So we wait ... until tomorrow morning for the x-ray results. I'm praying it isn't broken. I'm praying his diabetes doesn't suffer because of this.
