Broken? The Next Day (Project 365/2010)

I called the doctor's office first thing this morning, the x-ray report was in, but the doctor wasn't. After numerous calls, I finally got a call back around noon saying the report said there could be a break, but she didn't trust the report and take him to our local hospital for a splint. HA! I will not EVER take my (diabetic) son to our local hospital again after his DKA experience last June. Doctor really did try to get Cameron into an orthopedic that day, under an emergency referral because of his diabetes, but it just didn't come through.

I waited for Hubby to get home from work, loaded Cameron up, and we took the drive down to Loma Linda. The plus side of doing it this way was Loma Linda has a Quick Check-In, where I register Cameron for an ER appointment. It costs $24, but SO WORTH NOT HAVING TO WAIT HOURS. We have a guaranteed check-in window of 15 minutes. Cameron was checked right in. We had the same nurse, Cheryl, from our DKA visit, and she looked at us like, "OH NO!" She was relieved to see Cameron back on the pump, not in DKA, but saddened about his foot.

We saw 2 different doctors, had numerous x-rays, and all they could come up with was a fracture (possibly two) in the foot. They were torn on whether his ankle was affected or not, but every time they pushed on it, Cameron screamed. Cameron is sporting a walking boot with crutches and we follow up with Ortho next week (whichever comes through for us first, Loma Linda or the referral from Cameron's primary). Right now, it looks like a fracture in his foot.

Broken? (Project 365/2010)

Well we've had an eventful day. I had just walked in the door from Love & Logic when my cell phone rang around 11:10 am. I answered, in a manner not becoming of me, because Cameron had called me 3 times already with up and down blood sugar. "Mrs. Johnson this is Mr. Goodrow over at Vanguard." OH CRAP! The Principal was calling me. My first thought was I am going to hurt Cameron, because Cameron and a little buddy were already in Mr. Goodrow's office the FIRST day of school for being idiots and scratching each other with lead pencils. I digress. After I acknolwedged Mr. Goodrow he went on to say, "I have Cameron in the health office." OH CRAP! Is Cameron's blood sugar so low he can't call? The nurse isn't calling me...Dear God, did they have to use a glucagon? After I asked if he was okay, Mr. Goodrow went on to say, "Cameron and some friends were playing soccer and ... I think Cameron's broke his foot. The goal post came down on it. He's going to need some x-rays. I need you to come pick him up." You have got to be freaking kidding me.

I hung up the phone and called Cameron's doctor immediately. They were able to get us in at 3:45 pm and upon assessment, x-rays afterwards. I called Hubby and told him what happened, asked him to get a couple of period subs for the remainder of the school day, and off I went to pick up Cameron. On the drive over I was thinking just what a ROCKIN' immune system Cameron has. I told myself, I bet it's not broke, just severely sprained. (Don't get me started about poor Peyton, who was counting on lunch when we walked in the door, but had to leave immediately after and was crying for food.)

When I got to the school, Kristy, who is a front office gal, worked with my husband as an aid a few years ago, and was our fill-in nurse last year when our nurse wasn't in, grabbed me from behind the desk and said, "Come on." Her face read like a book. It was BAD! Before I got around the desk, out came Mr. Goodrow and Mrs. Bell, the counselor, and the looks on their faces were the same. Mr. Goodrow explained that Cameron and 4 friends tried to pick up and put right a tipped over goal post, that was chained to a 2nd goal post. OMG! Cameron got the brunt of it. Mrs. Bell was there because Cameron was extremely upset and worried about how this will affect his diabetes. He's only been back on the pump a week. I started crying because I had all the same thoughts in my head. I compossed myself and followed Mr. Goodrow to the health office.

My heart was broken. He looked so sad and he was in so much pain. I called the doctor to see if we could get him in sooner and they were able to move us up to 2:30. Kristy wheeled Cameron out to the car and lifted my son into the passenger seat. God Bless her! Off we went to get Hubby.

We drove like crazy to the doctor's office, tryign to catch her before lunch, to say WE CAN'T WAIT! We missed her by mere minutes. I arranged for my Aunt Pam to pick Dylan up from school, and then we raced over to the school to pick up Dylan. We got home and all kids needed lunch. Cameron took his blood and he was already in the 300's. His ketones were small. The pain and stress from his foot was affecting his diabetes. Off Cameron and Hubby went to the doctor's and then to x-ray. We won'tt hear anything until tomorrow. TOMORROW! What?!?!?!? X-rays are instant. Grrrrrr. Cameron's numbers were in the HIGH 300's at dinner and still small ketones. We corrected, corrected, corrected, water, water, water, and checked his ketones every hour until bed. By then he wasn't dropping ketones, but his numbers were still elevated. The last thing I needed was Cameron in DKA too.

So we wait ... until tomorrow morning for the x-ray results. I'm praying it isn't broken. I'm praying his diabetes doesn't suffer because of this.

Daddy's Hat Part Deux (Project 365/2010)

Not to be outdone by her big brother, Peyton played with Daddy's hat today.

And this was just too cute not to share. You should have seen her eyes cross when she first put it on. She sniffed up to keep it there too. hehehe

Cameron's Home (Project 365/2010)

Cameron came home from Camp today! Dylan and I made the trip down to the bus stop to pick him up (as Hubby & Peyton are still very sick). Dylan was climbing on something he shouldn't have, fell backwards, and hit his head so bad his hair and head were green from the grass. Finally the bus arrived, and I could already tell how the next few days will play out. Cameron is PMSing from Camp withdrawals. He made some great friends, including J.T., who he knew from church. He was disappointed that Kevin, his counselor, was taken from him for his second session and somebody took one of his disposable cameras and shot all the pictures. I already had the thought of getting him a cheap digital as an early birthday present next year. I did receive a letter from him this year, which was super exciting, except for the fact that the first line was how he saw 2 bears. Oy! Apparently he has a girlfriend from Camp, and showed off with pride all of his scraps and cuts. BOYS! Now we have to be diligent in his blood sugars over the next 5 days, fax them to his endocrinologist, and hopefully the following Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday he'll be back on the pump...just in time for 6th grade.

First Week of Kindergarten (Project 365/2010)

Dylan's first week of Kindergarten is over. The week started out rocky, and he even missed Day 2 because of a fever. He isn't adjusting as well as he did with Preschool, but we're working on it. This morning I sat in the courtyard and told him to go to the playground by himself. He did, he lined up with his class when it was time, and he smiled at me as the class walked by. However, after he got his backpack and into class, he began looking for me outside the window. I have 2 more weeks to train him, where I can drop him off, and he can walk into school all by himself. Friday's are Spirit Days, where they have the choice to wear blue jeans and a Spirit shirt. I had ordered Dylan's last month and they are super cute. The logo is Knights in Training. He was the ONLY (A.M.) Kindergartner who wasn't in uniform today. When I picked him up he had a certificate showing what a great first week of Kindergarten he had, plus his first homework packet.

Sicklies (Project 365/2010)

She doesn't look sick, but she is. Peyton started running a (103.5) fever sometime in the middle of the night. As if that wasn't bad enough, Hubby started running one while we were out to the movies (my Aunt watched the kids so we could see The Grown Ups) this afternoon. He is currently at the hospital, and for him to WANT to go to the hospital ... it means he is feeling SUPER bad. Dylan started this off last weekend, and with Cameron coming home in a few days, I pray that this passes us by quickly, and that Cameron and I don't get it.

Despicable Me (Project 365/2010)

We took the kiddos to see Despicable Me this afternoon. We TOTALLY loved it. Hilarious! Now I'm off to see Eclipse (again).

Here Comes the Bride (Project 365/2010)

I LOVE Target. What I love more than Target? CLEARANCE at Target. I scored a Bride Playset (veil and flowers) and a Princess Playset (purse and ribbon headband) for $3 each, marked down from $15 each (seriously would NOT have paid $15 for each of these). SCORE!

First Day of Kindergarten (Project 365/2010)

My heart is breaking this morning as Dylan is growing up. When he got up this morning he said he was ready to go to school, so I didn't stop him. However, after the night we had, I would have been okay with not sending him too. Funny thing is, his teacher's daughter missed her first day of 5th grade because she is sick. We did the yearly ritual, where I took pictures of Dylan ready for his first day (and he wore a weird smile in each picture). We got to school and lined up with the rest of his class, and then we are trailed in to the classroom. Dylan and I located his desk, he put his backpack on his chair, and stuck his name tag on his shirt. Ms. Cambridge, Dylan's teacher, instructed the class to find their name on the carpet and have a seat. After handling a few housekeeping items with us parents, she sat down to read the class my favorite first day of school book, The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn. After Chester the Raccoon went off to school, Ms. Cambridge gave each of the children a heart to give to their Mommy/Daddy, with instructions to hug and kiss them goodbye. I thought it was a great way to let the parents in on the action, but to show the children how to say goodbye to us too.

Dylan (Project 365/2010)

My heart is heavy as I post this, not knowing what the night will unfold. Dylan has been sick now for a few days. His symptoms were random and feeling confused, I decided to check his ketones. The stick turned purple (large ketones) instantly. I FREAKED! I then poked his finger to check his blood sugar number (95). I am in constant fear that Dylan or Peyton would develop Type 1 Diabetes. I don't know much about ketones in non-diabetics, so Hubby has taken Dylan down to the same hospital Cameron goes to. They are currently sitting in the Pediatric ER.

Update: Dr. ordered blood work and IV for Dylan (which breaks my heart). He is dehydrated from fever and illness. Ketones can be present in starvation diets (eating disorders) and various other scenarios in NON-diabetics. Dr. says Dylan's illness is viral and will just need to run it's course. He & Hubby got home around 1:30 am and we'll see if Dylan attends his first day of Kindergarten in 7 hours.
